Introduction

Social and Fun English Language Courses.

The Social and Fun English Language courses involve mornings in the classrooms, learning through student participation and using fun activities and games. The afternoons are spent in activities and English language learning continues as students learn while doing activities. Language learners can participate in different afternoon activities or can specalise in one activity during their stay in Letterfrack.
The courses are suitable for all ages and abilities. There is a maximum of 12 participants on each course although some courses such as the cookery course are limited to 6 students per class.
Students can design a course and accommodation package to suit their own , family or group needs.
All language learning is provided by highly qualified English language teachers who love to teach and translate their love of teaching and English into enthuiasm and dedication in their teaching practise. All activities are taught by suitably qualified and enthusiastic people; for instance the cookery element of the afternoon activity programme is taught by a local award winning chef.

The Location of the Connemara School of Language and Cultural Studies is at Heatherhill, Letterfrack in the heart of Connemara. The campus at Heatherhill is set on 11 acres of gardens and natural terrain and it is a very beautiful place with lovely views of Diamond mountain and Connemara National Park. The classrooms are based in one of the large houses at Heatherhill and at the G.M.I.T (Galway Mayo Institute of Technology)campus which is a 3 minute walk from Heatherhill. G.M.I.T is a third level college where over 200 students study degrees and post-graduate courses in furniture design and manufacture. 
Connemara is the adventure capital of Ireland with lots of activities taking place in its' mountains, lakes and seas, which form an amazing backdrop for the activities taking place which include; surfing, fishing, scuba diving and climbing. Letterfrack is at the heart of Connemara and is the starting point of lots of activities in particular hillwalking in the Connemara National Park which is based in Letterfrack. Letterfrack is also central to the cultural heart of Connemara and as such is home to a number of talented artists, musicians and dancers who are skilled teachers.

 
The accommodation can be provided at the campus in Heatherhill. There are 8 large 3-6 bedroomed houses in Heatherhill set into the landscaped gardens. These houses are ideal for families or groups and are of a very high quality with lots of space inside and out. Individuals can take a room in one of the Heatherhill houses and share with other language learners. There is also accommodation available with host families and in local hotels.

English and Art

The English and Art course is suitable for anyone with an interest in Art whatever their age or ability. Students will study English in the mornings with an emphasis on terminology and vocabluary that may present itself in the afternon session. Students will practise landscape drawing with a qualified, local art teacher in some of the countries most beautiful scenery. Students will also visit local galleries and artists, learn about irish and local art history, work with a local sculptist and a local potter. English Language and  Irish Music and Dance

We offer  extensive course options for those interested in Irish music and dance and cater for all levels. Experienced musicians may wish to spend afternoons with teachers trained and skilled in Irish traditional music particularly in the fiddle, tin whistle and squeeze box. Beginners may wish to concentrate on the tin whistle, songs and recitations. Various traditional dance styles can be included in the course such as ; set dancing, traditional Irish dancing and Sean Nos dancing. Students can also participate in Irish music and dance sessions held in the local area. This course is great fun and really gets to the heart of Irish culture in a very hands on way.

English and Adventure Activity

Connemara is the capital of adventure activity in Ireland. Students are spoilt for choice here as most adventure activities and sports are available close to Letterfrack. Students can design a programme to suit their individual, family or group needs with English language lessons in the mornings and the afternoons pursuing activities under the guidance of dedicated and qualified teachers. Activities available include surfing, mountain biking, scuba diving, wind surfing, hillwalking, mountain climbing, gorge walking, kayaking, cycling, rock climbing, canoeing, fly fishing, laser tag, archery, golf, sailing, sea angling etc.. English and Hillwalking

Letterfrack is the starting point for many walks through the Twelve Bens mountains including  the Diamond mountain walk. Hillwalking is suitable for all ages and abilities with walks graded at different levels and what better place to walk than in Connemara, a world renowned area for hillwalking. Mornings can be spent learning English and the afternoons can be spent in the company of experienced hillwalking guides, treking through the beautiful Connemara hills.

 

English and Irish Culture and History

There is a wealth of history and culture in the vicinity of Letterfrack from the near-by standing stones in Derryinver to the site of the first Trans-Atlantic flight near Clifden. Students can combine a course of English language with exploration of the culture and history of Ireland with particular reference to the local history of the Connemara area.
 Language learning naturally accelerates as students become more familiar with the history and culture of the language being learnt.

English and Horse-riding

Connemara is home to the sturdy Connemara pony, these ponies are known for their agility and good temperament, making them ideal riding ponies. Where better to ride the Connemara pony than on its' home turf ? Students can spend the mornings studying English language and the afternoons pony treking through the fields and woods of Connemara at the breathtakingly beautiful Errislannan Manor. A perfect way to spend a holiday for families and individuals.

English and Cooking

Students can study English in the mornings and spend the afternoons in small groups or individually recieving instruction and cooking typical Irish dishes with local award winning chef John Walsh. The cookery lessons will be conducted at John's restaurant kitchen at the Pangur Ban in Letterfack. Pangur Ban is a lovingly restored thatch cottage with a large rear addition of a commercial kitchen.
